Revisions and my revision experience

General information

  • If there are functional problems (not aesthetic), Dr Hart does not charge. However, you will pay for the hospital and anaesthetist, as well as the travel to Canberra.
  • Dr Hart on revision cost
    • “In the event that a patient requires a straight-forward, functional revision procedure post- operatively (e.g. urethroplasty, vaginal dilation, cystoscopy or EUA), there will be no charge for the surgeon (anaesthetist and hospital may have a fee).”
  • I’m unsure about the rate of revision, it seems somewhat common.

My revision experience

  • I needed several things revised. The wait time for me (2025) was a week, but it ended up being a month due to Easter and me not being able to take that first available appointment.
    • I’m unsure if my issues were a result of anything I or Dr Hart did, or just random chance. For information on what I needed revised, see my section in “Experienced complications”.
  • For minor revisions it is day surgery, but since I had to have spongiosal tissue excised I was kept overnight.
  • I needed a Mid Stream Urine (MSU) test done 7-10 days prior to the operation.
    • They say on the documents to get this done at Capital pathology Canberra
    • I emailed and asked to just have it done at a pathologist in my home city (they said this was fine) as showing up a week before for an overnight operation is inconvenient and expensive.
  • Fasting from around midnight and no water as well I think. No other pre op requirements.
  • The hospital experience is identical to the last time, see “My surgical experience” in the surgery section.
    • The only difference is less care is given to you by nurses as it isn’t as serious as the other people recovering from SRS in the ward
  • It took 45 minutes from first admission (7:30am) to the pre OR area. My phone and items were stored at 9:50am. I think I got into the actual OR around 10am-ish. I woke up around 12pm
  • Recovery was easy compared to last time. I kept waiting to experience horrible pain but I only really needed paracetamol.
  • I forgot how bad movicol tastes.
    • It tastes like an unwashed empty lemon gatorade bottle was washed with milk, rinsed out, and then filled with water. lol
  • Getting the nurse to discharge me was a horrendous experience.
    • It took three hours from when I was supposed ot be discharged to actually leave
    • All I had to do was a void test to see if I could pee properly after catheter removal and for them to do 10 minutes of paperwork.
  • On that note, some nurses are really great, they are lovely and take their job seriously. Some nurses are so frustrating to have around and shouldn’t be nurses.
    • This is consistent from the last time I was at this hospital.
    • The wait time for any care is absurd, I don’t understand why this hospital has so few nurses.
  • After being discharged finally, I got an uber back with my partner to our accommodation for the night a few minutes from the hospital.
    • It was walking distance for her, and also the cheapest available which was nice. It was small but serviceable and I’d recommend it to people here for an operation if it’s only you and your partner (Link).

After surgery, I lost some depth for a while and I was scared that I was going to fully lose it as I couldnt dilate to my usual depth

For the questions I asked after this revision see May 13th onwards in Questions I asked

It made me a bit sad to take a step backwards with dilating. It’s uncomfortable again in the way it was at the start of recovery. I suppose there’s new scars trying to contract that I have to stretch out again. I bled a bit in one session, even on my first dilator (i extended my range of dilators used and added a smaller one), this was pretty unsettling. But the bleeding stopped and didn’t happen in the next session. So, my guess is i either went too fast dilating, or the surgery gave me a late developing hymen to break for cisgender immersion.
