Lubricant
Directly after surgery while your incisions haven’t fully closed you’ll probably want to use a bacteriostatic lubricant such as Surgilube.
Lubricants I have tried
“enjoy” Lovehoney $0.0659/mL
- Smells like nothing
- pH matched
- Good consistency for dilating (not runny liquid, not thick gel)
- My current lubricant of choice and recommendation to you
“H2O Original” JO $0.1083/mL
- Very liquid
- I found it useful to use in conjunction with the “enjoy” Lovehoney lubricant
- the enjoy lube forms the body while H2O made it more slippery
- You don’t need as much of this as with the gel lubricants
- I don’t currently use this
“Almost Naked” Good Clean Love $0.2517/mL
- “nicer” ingredients
- pH matched
- Expensive!
- Has a hypoallergenic version
- I bought it once when i was on a real “oh god my vaginal microflora I’m killing them” moment
- If I were to use it again it would probably be when I’m at the point of dilating once a week, even then I’d feel like I was getting ripped off.
“Lubrigel”
- Has a pungent odour
- pH 7
- mystery ingredients
- annoying consistency
- Not recommended
Lubricants I haven’t tried but I have heard about
“Cum Lube® Clear ” Bad Dragon $0.0375/mL
- The listed ingredients are not bad.
- Half the price per mL of the lovehoney lubricant.
- By far the cheapest I have found.
“Liquid” Good Clean love
- Does not ship to Australia
“H2O original” Sliquid
“Slippery Stuff” Slipperystuff
“Surgilube”
Coconut oil
- Seems like a bad idea
- Would be a hard clean up
My ideal lubricant is one that:
- Is water based
- Easy to clean
- More tolerable for your body
- Less reported issues
- Won’t damage your dilators
- Doesn’t have harmful ingredients
- You need to use this daily for a long time
- Is affordable and easily available
- Is unscented
- Has no numbing agents
- Although this would be nice, you need to be able to feel what’s going on to avoid hurting yourself.
A decent lubricant is something that I personally struggled with finding. And even more so just figuring out what I should be looking for was hard enough. My initial thought was that since I’ve had PPV, and now have peritoneum inside my vagina producing a neutral pH liquid, that I should also find a neutral pH lubricant so I can build and not disrupt the microflora developing in the vagina. However, I discovered there are no neutral pH lubricants out there that fit the bill. Neutral pH lubricants are typically either for surgical use (containing antibacterial agents) or for anal use.
I had inherited some bottles of “Lubrigel” from a woman that had previously had SRS. This stuff had a strange smell and was not excellent. This is what I used initially before branching out. Since it was such a problem to find, I just went for regular vaginal lubricant aimed at cis women. This worked out fine.
While I have not tried oil or silicone based lubricants, I have not read a single good word about them online other than that they last longer than water based ones (which is a negative in some cases).
- They can damage dilators and condoms
- Your body may not tolerate them
- They are likely not very good for your vaginal microbiota
I’ve been using “pH matched” i.e. typical cisgender vaginal pH lubricants for over a year and it’s been fine. Everything smells normal, except for a few hours right after I’ve dilated. I imagine this is a result of disturbing the vaginal microflora as well as from the lubricant itself.
